The Hoarfrost Comes Alive

Yes i know i photograph a lot of trees in steam. In Yellowstone in winter it’s just what ya do. I love the possibilities that can emerge from the combination of the trees and the vents. Everything form the shape of the trees to the location where the trees are. Take these three for example. Nothing really special about any of these trees, a bunch of pine trees and a couple of aspens. Whoop dee doo. However, when they immersed in the steam from the geyser pool the possibilities seem endless.

The important thing to keep in mind with all this is the temperature. Not only does the temperature affect the critters in the park, including the people that visit it, but it also affects the amount of steam that comes out of the geyser basins. With the colder temp comes more steam rising. That’s why in summer the trees don’t look as cool.
