The Rare Falls of Yosemite

There are many falls here in Yosemite, all of which are magnificent when the flow is good. With the good snow dump we’ve had of late, the falls are all looking particularly good for this time of the year. Well of the most rare and extravagant of the falls is Horsetail Falls which supposedly can only be seen in February. With the amount of snow we have the falls are flowing quite nicely, but just the fact they are flowing isn’t what makes them so special. What makes them special is a sliver of light that comes down, when the rock is in shadow, that lights up only the waterfall. Well it didn’t happen the other day but the falls still looked great.

Now when i was playing with the falls, waiting for that special moment when the light would hit just the water, i tried many different things to bring out the color, the vibrance, the detail in the rock and the speed of the water. Doing all this i messed with the white balance, went back forth from vivid to standard and changed the depth of field. In the end of course i turned them into black and whites trying to make the water pop. There’s definitely more room to play with and this will be something that i’ll have to come back too.
